Left: DJ Zig Zag (Bill Reiter), Right: Sweet Daddy Fonk (Sunny Wong) The 2011 REELRADIO Holiday Presentation of this aircheck marks the tenth anniversary of the CHMBbroadcast on December 9, 2001. There were some parts missing in the original recording, so a few segments from the December 2, 2001 show were merged into this exhibit. Bill Reiter's impact on Vancouver radio is substantial. His voice is still heard most days on the radio as far away as Edmonton, Alberta. This special All Christmas, All The Time show is a continuation of his franchise Groovin' Blue show, featuring 'New World African Music', comprised of 'Jazz, Soul, Funk, R&B, Reggae, Blues and Gospel'.
Groovin' Blue, produced and hosted by Bill Reiter, first aired on Vancouver radio station CKLG-FM in October, 1967. CKLG management wanted to air a unique program that echoed the type originally hosted in San Francisco by on KYA's 'All Night Flight'. Since that original show, the Groovin' Blueformat has aired on other Vancouver radio stations including CKST-FM (Coast 1040), CJVB-AM/1470, and CHMB-AM/1320. For this special Holiday show, Bill is DJ Zig Zag, and his co-host Sunny Wong appears as Sweet Daddy Fonk.
Sunny never worked in radio, other than with Bill. One promo that includes short clips from Wolfman Jack on XERB and Art Laboe offers a clue for Reiter's influences.
He dedicates a song to the incarcerated ('things are bad, but they could be worse') and tells a story about receiving a Rooty Toot for a Christmas present. Sweet Daddy Fonk & DJZigZag were moved by the starkness of the Historic College Hill Courts when they visited Chattanooga, TN.
In October of 2010. With so many middle-class Americans of African descent losing their homes and jobs, the juxtaposition of the 1965 single by 'Big' Daddy Rucker with the video's view of the housing development administered by CARTA (the Chattanooga Regional Transportation Authority) didn't seem too far away from today's reality. WAGRadio Management Producers: DJZigZag & JasMan Director: DJZigZag Camera: DJZigZag Asst. QUOTING FROM THE PRESS RELEASE: THIS FILM IS A PERSONAL and MUSICAL BIOGRAPHY OF JOHNNY OTIS, THE MUSICIAN, BANDLEADER, PRODUCER AND SONGWRITER WHO IS OFTEN CALLED 'The Godfather of Rhythm 'n' Blues'.
BUT IT IS MORE THAN THE BIOGRAPHY OF ONE MAN, JUST AS THE STORY OF R&B IS ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN MUSIC. JOHNNY'S ODYSSEY THROUGH THE WORLD OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC IN THE 20th CENTURY IS A WINDOW INTO THE ARENAS OF RACE AND CULTURE THAT HAVE DEFINED AND TRANSFORMED CONTEMPORARY AMERICA - AND, IN TURN, HAVE TOUCHED THE WHOLE WORLD. THE PASSION AND THE JOURNEY ON WHICH IT HAS TAKEN JOHNNY OTIS (real name - John Veliotis) ARE AT THE CENTRE OF 'EVERY BEAT OF MY HEART' - FROM THE SWING ERA, TO R'N'B AND THE RISE OF ROCK 'N' ROLL - MORE THAN HALF A CENTURY OF MUSIC REFLECTED THROUGH THE PRISM OF A SINGULAR LIFE. Maybe we'll have to travel down to Seattle, WA to see this one. WAGRadio Management.
'(Rhythm 'n' Blues band leader Lucky Millinder) stood up for his people. Back in 1940 Down Beat magazine predicted that Negro orchestras were on their way out, which provoked a passionate response from Lucky in an Amsterdam News (black-American newspaper) editorial. 'Can Down Beat tell us what hit swing song past or hit swing arrangement the white bands have featured that colored bandsmen or arrangers haven't had something to do with?' 'I get sick and tired of hearing would-be white critics on colored music telling us how bad colored music is, and yet praising white bands to the skies for playing the Negro's creations.' 'Meanwhile, (Duke Records president) Don Robey was beginning to recognize the value of integration in the record industry. In February 1957 Billboard discontinued its 'Rhythm-Blues Notes' column and replaced it with a column called 'On the Beat.' Writer Gary Kramer offered this rationale: 'No abstract categories prevent the teenager today from buying records by Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Carl Perkins or Little Richard at one and the same time.
The trade, therefore, must revise, and perhaps abandon, some of the old boundary lines.' Twenty-seven songs later the wonderful “Gimme Little Sign” by Brenton Wood made an appearance. So far, that’s two Black records out of seventy. In fact, a total of only twenty-three (23) New World African Music 45’s made the CKLG-AM Top 173 in 1967. Although, if you added the pop-ish “Up, Up and Away” and “Go Where You Wanna Go” by The Fifth Dimension there were twenty-five.
Faith Evans 1994
If you generously included the admittedly funky “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “I’m A Man” by Spencer Davis Group and the Soul Survivors’ “Expressway To Your Heart” there were twenty-eight. Artist-wise the chart broke down this way – four records by The Supremes, two each by the Four Tops and Aretha Franklin (but not “I Never Loved A Man (The Way That I Loved You)” and one each by Brenton Wood, Stevie Wonder, Arthur Conley, Miriam Makeba, Wilson Pickett, (The)Parliament(s), The Four Tops, Jackie Wilson, Bill Cosby, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Roger Collins, the Miracles, Sam & Dave (but not “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby”), and The Esquires (#173). Three 1966 released tunes that received most of their airplay in ’67 – “Tell It Like It Is” by Aaron Neville, J.J. Jackson’s “But It’s Alright” and Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally” - were also included in the CKLG-AM 1967 chart.
On the other side of the wall in CKLG’s FM studio, Canada’s first all-genre Black music show - “Groovin’ Blue” - hosted and produced by Bill Reiter, had a 1967 TOP ONE HUNDRED PLUS that echoed the music being listened to on the city's east side and looked like this.
